Rose Hips Herbal Tincture

Rose hips, also called rose haw, are the pome (fruit) of the rose plant. Typically red or orange, rose hips vary in color and can even be dark purple or black in some species. Rose hips ripen in late summer or autumn and are used in various herbal teas and beverages (even wine), jellies, jams, and syrups, and even in more savory treats like breads and soups. The greatest thing about rose hips, however, is there high level of vitamin C; just 100 grams of rose hips can contain up to 2000 milligrams of vitamin C.

The medicinal qualities of rose hips are numerous. In addition to their high vitamin C content, rose hips also contain vitamins A and B, and are a good source of essential fatty acids and antioxidants. In humans, rose hips are used as a cure for influenza and the common cold and recent studies have even shown rose hips to be affective in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Dried rose hips and powders made from them have been used as a coat and hoof enhancer in horses, and have been used as a vitamin C-rich treat for guinea pigs and chinchillas (who are unable to produce their own vitamin C). In traditional Chinese medicine, rose hips have long been used for stomach problems and studies are being done currently concerning the positive effects rose hips may have on controlling cancer growth.
